9-15-06 Meeting Minutes

We met at 7PM in Cox Hall Classroom A.

Software Freedom Day is September 16th, but we will hold our event on the 15th to reach more students. We need people to commit to doing a range of things

Before:
Design flyers and distribute them to academic buildings and residence halls
Burn copies of Ubuntu CDs (which also includes Windows software)
Print handouts (the files to print will be posted on LearnLink)
Provide laptops for software demonstration
Make press calls (faxed releases will go out the 11th)

Day of:
Setup the table in the Coke Commons
Man the display in shifts from 10AM to 2PM

October 3rd is the Defective by Design campaign’s Day Against DRM, which we definitely want to participate in. We’ll watch here for ideas and also come up with our own. This might be a good use of the “decoder rings” we received from EFF.

We are interested in showing a series of films such as Alternative Freedom, Steal this Film, and Revolution OS. We’ll look into locations and prices for doing this on campus.

We decided that using editable documents on Learnlink was no longer meeting our collaboration needs and are evaluating wiki hosts.

We have an idea for a collaborative art project and will be fleshing that out and contacting arts groups.

We still need to collect dues, hold elections, and settle on a regular meeting place and time.

April Meeting Minutes

We discussed budget needs. At the beginning of next semester we will draft a bill to address them.

Alan Cattier of Academic Technologies has agreed to meet with us about iTunes U.

We planned recruitment and coaltion-building activities. We will
a) acquire a list of incoming freshmen to contact
b) try to have a presence at widely-attended campus activities
c) contact art and music groups on campus

We also discussed boosting CopyNight attendance. We will
a) take advantage of whatever easy publicity opportunities we can find (eg- Creative Loafing, Craigslist, mailing lists, bulletin boards)
b) advertise free coffee on our starbucks card
c) come up with a list of local organizations to contact

We brainstormed ideas for future activities.

Brian was nominated for president, and Andrew was nominated for treasurer. Free Culture will continue to take nominations for these positions as well as for liason (someone, please!) and secretary (double please!) through April 30th. On May 1st, ballots will be sent electronically to full members.

Feb 16 Meeting Minutes

1) Budget Request by 27th. Prereq is perpetual charter. For charter, must raise $100.
a) Dues- $10 each. Due by 23rd, turn in to Andrew or Brian.
b) Bake sale- Nick is contacting potential donors of coffee and food. Brian is applying for space in White Hall next week. Andrew is burning cc music to disribute.
c) Shirts- Brian will contact vendors about their rates. Design ideas?
2) Hub filesharing article is dead. Emory’s music licensing committee is stalled. Q: Which of these directions should EFC pursue first? A: DRM. The current plan is to contact varius parts of the university that might deal with DRM as well as design a student survey about it. More discussion to follow.
3) CampusMovieFest- We missed our opportunity this year, but Andrew will resume contact. Our dream goal: Promotion of cc material (like here) and cc-licensing as an option for the movies produced.
4) FC.org is having a conference at Swathmore Easter weekend. Brian and Andrew are interested, anyone else want to go? We’ll request SGA funding once we’re chartered.
5) CC has info up about legal, tech, and media internships this summer.

Nov 17 Meeting Minutes

No one has been able to provide Andrew with contact information for Emory’s Campus MovieFest organizers, so he will try contacting campusmoviefest.com.

The Spoke is running an article about filesharing in the December issue. Some of our members have been interviewed, and the writers have read material from Free Culture and downhillbatle.org

Brian has put documents for our DRM event material, letter to ITD, and student survey on our collaboration conference. We need to do the following things:

  • Turn DRM material into presentation and handouts
  • Reserve a room with a/v for week after Thanksgiving
  • Design an ad
  • Advertise DRM event- blog, learnlink, facebook, signs, chalking
  • Draft Letter and survey
  • Set up survey software
  • Be ready to go when the next issue of The Hub comes out

Because of the proximity to Thanksgiving, we won’t try to host a CopyNight this month.

Chapter Update

CopyFright was a success. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and learning about copyright. Five people came to an EFC event for the first time. Personal contact and facebook were the most effective advertising methods.

For our next campuswide event we decided to hold a DRM education seminar. Work on the bittorrent issue and iMovieFest will also continue.

Andrew, Brian, and Jenna attended the installfest. We helped several people there and talked about what EFC is doing.

We’ve contacted CopyNight.org about hosting a local CopyNight at the Caribou Coffee in Emory Village.

College Council has granted us a 3-month temporary charter.

10-18-05 Meeting Minutes

Brian and Jenna were present in the DUC at the meeting time. Since no one else could make it, we decided to conduct the meeting online.

Brian reported on the symposium. Pictures are available here.

The charter application process continues. Our previous advisor no longer wants the position. Chris Roddy volunteered, but College Council said staff are ineligible. Members were encouraged to contact any faculty that might be willing to be our advisor.

ALE is staging an installfest Saturday, November 5th at the law school. Those of us who can will participate.

Brian introduced Copynight and recommended we try to host them. The venue and advertising methods were left for future discussion.

Brian talked about ideas for a “CopyFright”-themed Halloween party.

Matt suggested we stage an “Unhappy Birthday” event.

Andrew volunteered to write a piece for The Wheel about the Google Print lawsuit. He will submit it for review by club members when it is finished.

We discussed future plans for the bittorrent campaign.
